Luke 1:26-38

1. The name Gabriel means ‘Strong man of God’.
2. Jesus was born in Bethlehem but his parents were from Nazareth, a town in Galilee.
3. Doctor Luke is very clear when he points out that Mary was a virgin (v 27, 34) when the angel Gabriel came to her.
4. Both Mary (Luke 3:23-37) and Joseph (Matthew 1:1-16) were descendants of David. “Thus Jesus inherited from His adoptive father, Joseph, the legal right to David’s throne, while His physical descent from David came from His mother, Mary.” MacArthur
5. The birth of Jesus is the fulfillment of prophecies that God would provide a Messiah.
A. Genesis 3:15 Through a woman God would provide someone to crush the head of the serpent.
B. Genesis 12:1-3 The Messiah would be from the family of Abram.
C. Genesis 17:19 From the descendants of Isaac.
D. Genesis 28:13-15 From the descendants of Jacob.
E. Genesis 49:10 From the tribe of Judah.
F. Isaiah 7:14 He would be born of a virgin.
G. Micah 5:2 The birth would be in Bethlehem.
H. 2 Samuel 7:16 & Isaiah 9:7 He would be a king to reign on David’s throne forever.
6. It’s not unusual for an angel to have to tell a person, “do not be afraid.”
7. ‘Most High’ refers to the God above all gods.
8. ‘The power of the Most High will overshadow you’, means that God will take possession of you and cause you to conceive apart from biological procreation.

9. God chooses to use humble people that are willing to sacrifice their life for his purpose.
10. The name Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua meaning, ‘Jehovah is salvation.’
11. Luke testifies to the research he did to write the book of Luke (See Luke 1:3-4). Tradition holds that Luke talked with Mary about the events he recorded in the first two chapters of Luke.
12. Jesus did not inherit Adam’s sinful nature because of the supernatural conception, therefore Jesus had to remain obedient to God in order to remain without sin.
13. Mary volunteered to be pregnant before consummating the marriage, without knowing how Joseph would respond, in order to do what God asked of her.
14. Mary was a young teenager, no older than fifteen, when Gabriel appeared to her.
15. Jesus had four brothers and some sisters. Matthew 13:5-56
16. Mary and Joseph allowed God to interrupt their plans in order for God to use them in His plan to provide redemption for mankind. Are you being obedient to God’s call on your life?
17. God continues to call people into his service.
18. Mary didn’t know all the details of what would follow, she just wanted to be obedient to God’s call on her life.
19. “God could have chosen any means to communicate His gospel to the world. But for reasons we can’t fully comprehend, He chose us.” John MacArthur

22. Application:
God wants to use you in His plan for redeeming mankind. (You have a grace gift from God to enable you to be His vessel for service.)
God has equipped you to be successful.
Jesus, the Son of God, came in the likeness of man to pay my sin debt.
Jesus is coming again to rule and reign.
