Proverbs 31:10-16, 23-31
1. Verses 10-31 is an acrostic in which each verse begins with the successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet (22 letters). ESV Study Bible note.
2. Chapter 31 is the words of King Lemuel (see v 1) that his mother taught him. No one knows who he was or where he was king.
3. Men of Proverbs:
Wise man 9:8-9; 12:15; 21:20,22; 24:5; 29:11
Simple man 1:4,22,32; 7:7; 14:15,18
Slothful man 12:24,27; 19:15
Diligent man 10:4; 12:24,27; 13:4; 21:5
4. Women of Proverbs:
The personification of wisdom as a woman (July 12, Lesson 6). Proverbs 8:1-21
“A gracious woman get honor...” Proverbs 11:16a
The woman who fears the LORD. Proverbs 31:30
5. The wife of (noble/excellent/virtuous) character:
A noble wife is from the LORD.
She has intrinsic value that makes her priceless.
Her husband gives her his full trust.
She does no harm to her husband.
Her heart is towards building up her husband.
She is industrious with the gifts God has given her.
She provides food for the family.
She uses a wide variety of skills to provide for the family and the poor.
Fine linen and purple point to her physical beauty and being successful.
She is known for her dignity and strength of character.
She is not worried about the future.
She is wise, kind, and gracious.
Her children call her blessed.
Her husband praises her.
She fears the LORD.
The fruit of her hands praises her in the public square.
Many are excellent but the wife God provides you surpasses them all.
