Lessons Learned
Luke 19:28-40
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. Ever since Luke 9:51 Jesus has been headed toward Jerusalem.
2. Jesus was leading all the people that were following him to Jerusalem.
3. John 11:32-42 records that not many days before the triumphal entry, Jesus had raised Lazarus from the grave.
4. This was at the time of the Passover celebration in which all the males in Israel were to travel to Jerusalem for the celebration. This would be a very large crowd of people.
5. Just east of Jerusalem is the Mount of Olives (About 200 feet higher than the city). Just beyond the peak were Bethphage and Bethany.
6. Zechariah 9:9 is the prophecy that Jesus would ride the foal of a donkey into Jerusalem.
7. “If Jesus had not ridden a donkey into Jerusalem, Israel would have an excuse for not knowing Him. At the time of the Triumphal Entry Jesus proclaimed His kingship publicly and officially.” (What the Bible Teaches—Luke)
8. In the ancient Middle Eastern world, leaders rode horses if they rode to war, but donkeys if they came in peace.
9. 2 Kings 9:13 is an example of people placing their cloaks in the path of Jehu to proclaim him as king.
10. The other three gospels mention palm branches or leafy branches spread in the path of Jesus.
11. “Palm branches were a symbol of Jewish nationalism since the time of the Maccabees.” Guzik

People that came out of Jerusalem to meet Him. John 12:12-13
13. The crowd was reciting from Psalm 88:26.
14. The Pharisees were offended by the tribute and honor directed toward Jesus and asked Jesus to stop them.
15. Jesus used the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem to:
· Fulfill prophecy. Zechariah 9:9
Publicly and officially proclaim Himself to be the Messiah King.
Press the time schedule for His crucifixion. The chief priests were planning to wait until after the Passover celebration. (God’s time schedule called for the crucifixion to coincide with the day the sacrificial lamb was slain since Jesus is the lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world.)
