Mark 10:32-45

Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. The parallel passages of Mark 10:32-34 are Matthew 20:17-19 and Luke 18:31-34.

2. The parallel passage of Mark 10:35-45 is Matthew 20:20-28.

3. The road from Jericho to Jerusalem video:

The first 2 minutes illustrate the terrain of the trip from Jericho to Jerusalem.

4. The gospels include Jesus’ predictions of His death and resurrection to show that these events were God’s plan from the beginning and not an accident. (NIV study Bible note.)

5. Honor is not a result of position, but the byproduct of humility. Pastor Randy Fields

6. Jesus served humanity by paying the ransom, the giving of His life, to pay for humanity’s sin debt.

7. Bond-servant or slave - One who is subservient to, and entirely at the disposal of, his master.

8. James and John were anticipating that Jesus might be crowned king on the current

trip to Jerusalem.

9. Men’s definition of greatness is measured by how many people serve you.

10. God’s definition of greatness is measured by being a servant of all.

11. In Matthew’s account it was the mother of James and John who made the request. Matthew 20:20

12. Jesus had already told the disciples that greatness was about being the ‘servant of all’ (Mark 9:35) when the disciples were arguing about who was the greatest.

13. The other disciples’ reaction to the request of James and John reveals that this caused discord and envy among them.

14. Jesus resolves the discord by using His life and ministry as an example; He had come to serve and give Himself as a ransom.

15. ‘Ransom’ is only used in the New Testament in this story. It is a well-known word in ordinary Greek as a way to refer to purchasing the freedom of a slave or a war prisoner. Dr. Kendall Easley

16. John had learned the lesson Jesus was teaching, for he wrote, “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” 1 John 3:16 NKJV

17. James was killed by King Herod. Acts 12:1-2

18. John was exiled to the island of Patmos on account of the “...word of God and the testimony of Jesus.” Revelation 1:9

19: Application:

  • The death and resurrection of Jesus were God’s plan from the foundation of the world.

  • Mark 10:31 is explained more fully in Mark 10:43-44.

  • In God’s economy, being a servant outranks being in authority.
