Genesis 11:1-9
Lessons Learned

1. Genesis 10 lists the generations of Noah’s descendants and the nations and languages that divided them
· Japheth Genesis 10:5 “...each with their own language.”
· Ham Genesis 10:20 “...their languages, their lands, and their nations.”
· Shem Genesis 10:31 “...their languages, their lands, and their nations.”
2. Genesis 11 is the story of how it came about that nations became divided as described in Genesis 10 and had different languages.
3. As Moses unfolds the story in Genesis, the Hebrew people were told how God’s hand had been at work from the beginning in the lives of people with faith in God.
4. The first eleven chapters of Genesis cover approximately 2000 years. Dr. Sam Crouch
5. Genesis 12 (God’s call to Abram to go to a land He would show him) through Genesis 50 (the death of Joseph in Egypt) covers about 350 years. Dr. Sam Crouch
6. Ham is the youngest son of Noah. Genesis 9:22,24
7. Different versions of the Bible do not agree on who is the older between Shem and Japheth.

8. Shinar was located in the plains of Mesopotamia and came to be known as Babylonia.
9. Babel is translated from the same Hebrew word as Babylon and sounds like the Hebrew word for confused.
10. “Pride goes before destruction,
and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18 ESV
11. Application:
· This story causes me to reflect on myself to see if I am guilty of seeking to bring glory to myself rather than glorifying God with my life.
· God can engineer circumstances to accomplish His will.
· Unity is a good thing when it is rooted in obedience to God’s plan.
