Lessons Learned

1. Paul moved from Athens, the cultural capital of Greece, to Corinth which was the commercial center of Greece.
2. Corinth was about 46 miles west of Athens.
3. Paul, with his team of Silas and Timothy, birthed the church in Corinth and gave 1½ years to the work there before moving on.
4. Corinth was the capital province of Achaia during the 1st century.
5. Worship of idols and immorality was very common in Corinth.
6. The temple of Aphrodite was the center of idolatrous worship on the lowest possible moral level. [1000 so-called "priestesses" (more accurately ritual prostitutes)]
7. The temple of Aphrodite was on the summit of Acrocorinth, a huge rocky mountain to the north of the city. See picture below.
8. Sexual immorality in conjunction with the temple of Aphrodite was rampant in Corinth.
9. God provided Paul with companions for ministry and work.
10. Bithynia and Pontus were along the Black Sea.
11. Commentators believe that it was hard for Paul to be alone due to his poor eye sight, therefore, finding Aquila and Priscilla was a blessing for Paul.
12. God can work in a pagan community to draw people to himself.
13. Application:
Don’t become discouraged by those who reject the gospel.
New believers need someone to help them become secure in the gospel.
