Lessons Learned

1. Outline for today:

i.   Paul was an example in ministry. V 18-21

ii.  Paul’s future. V 22-27

iii. Paul warns of heresy. V 28-31

iv. Paul encouraged them to use the Word for their spiritual health. V 32

2. Paul briefly visited Ephesus on the 2nd mission trip, see Acts 18:19-21. Paul stayed in Ephesus for 3 years on his 3rd mission trip, see Acts 20.31.

3. “Repentance is just the sick man’s acknowledgment of his illness.”  H.A. Ironside

4. False teachers are an enemy of the gospel.

6. The gospel is not altered for Jew or Gentile, male or female, slave or free.

7. Church leaders are counseled to first nourish their own spiritual life.

8. Spiritual leaders are gifts that the Holy Spirit gives to the church.

9. The church is precious to God, Jesus purchased it by giving his lifeblood on a cruel Roman cross.

10. “Duty is more important than life.” Albert Barnes

11. Church leaders are counseled to be on guard for enemy attacks which can advance from either outside or inside the church.

12. The Holy Spirit is your source of understanding God’s truth.

13. God will take care of your needs.

14. Greediness is not God’s way.

15. Generosity is the antidote for greediness.

16. Paul expressed his desire to go to Rome in Acts 19:21

17. “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (NKJV) Gal 2:20 Written before Paul’s 1st missionary journey.

18. “But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.” (NIV) Phil 2:17 Written while in prison in Rome.

19. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (NIV)

2 Timothy 4:7 Paul’s last communication before he died. Paul had no regrets, he finished well.

20. Are you obedient to the Holy Spirit? Rate yourself on a 1 to 10 scale.

21. Application:

  • Is your life an example that others can follow in order for them to grow in their faith?

  • Is your goal to finish the course God has mapped out for you OR are you afraid of what that would cost you in this life?

  • Are you using the Word of God to:

Build yourself up and give yourself an inheritance?
