Genesis 22:1-14

Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. When God calls, how long do you wait to answer?

2. God prepares his people for the tests they go through. The final test is reserved for those who have finished the course.

3. Genesis 12-24 shows us the growing faith of Abraham.

4. Moriah is the mountain range where Jerusalem is situated and also where Calvary stood. Believers Bible Commentary p58

5. This story causes us to ask the question, “What do you love most in your life?”  God or _____________ (something else).

6. “John 8:56 is a reference to Abraham’s joy in seeing the ram caught in the thicket. That ram was the substitute that would save Isaac’s life. Seeing that ram was, in essence, seeing the day of Christ, the Substitute for us all.” GotQuestions.org

“Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” John 8:56 ESV

7. Parallels between (Abraham and Isaac) and (God the Father and Jesus).

Abraham loved Isaac                            God loves His Son Jesus

Isaac carried the wood                          Jesus carried his cross

Isaac did not resist                                Jesus gave his life

A ram was substituted for Isaac             Jesus is our substitute

8. Abraham’s faith is held up to us as an example in the New Testament.

17By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 19He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.” Hebrews 11:17-19 ESV

9. When God wanted to show us the ultimate demonstration of His love and commitment to us, He gave us His son, who became our substitute for the penalty of our sin.

“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:32 ESV

10. Application:

·        The ram was God’s provision for Isaac, and Jesus Christ is God’s provision for the whole world. (In order for this to apply in your life; you must Admit your need, Believe in Jesus, and Confess Him before men.) {The ABC’s of the gospel.}

·              God intends for your faith to grow.

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Romans 10:17

·               Real faith is demonstrated when you believe and do what God says even though you do not see how it will all fit together.
