Genesis 30:25-24, 41-43

Lessons Learned

1. Jacob’s age at various events in his life.

  • Isaac was 60 years old when Esau and Jacob were born. Gen 25:26

  • Isaac was 100 when Esau and Jacob were 40, Esau took 2 Hittite women for wives at this time. Gen 26:34

  • Isaac was 137 when Jacob stole Esau’s blessing. Esau and Jacob were 137-60=77. (Tradition uses this age for Isaac because Ishmael died at 137. Gen 25:17)

  • Jacob served Laban for 7 years for Rachel but was given Leah. Jacob was 84. Gen 29:18

  • Jacob served Laban for an additional 7 years for Rachel. Jacob was 84. Gen 29:27

  • Jacob is 77+7+7=91 when Joseph is born. Gen 30:25

  • Jacob served Laban for 6 more years for his flocks.

  • Jacob is 77+7+7+6= 97 when he returned to Canaan. Gen 31:41

  • Isaac died when he was 180 years old. Gen 35:28

  • Jacob was 180-60= 120 years old when Isaac died.

  • Jacob died at the age of 147. Gen 47:28

2. Jacob is sneaky—Laban is super sneaky. Pastor Spry

3. God never hires His servants; they work for Him out of love and gratitude. Dr. Janice Meier

4. Jacob’s dream of the striped, spotted, and mottled goats. Gen 31:10-12

5. Jacob prospered because of God’s blessing on him.

6. Events since the previous lesson:

  • Gen 29: 1-30 Jacob acquires 2 wives at the cost of 14 years of service taking care of Laban’s flocks.

  • Gen 29:31-35 Children born to Leah, his first but unloved wife.

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah

  • Gen 30:1-8 Rachel was barren so she gave her servant Bilhah to Jacob to bear children.

Dan and Naphtali

  • Gen 30:9-13 Leah gave her servant Zilpah to Jacob to bear children.

Gad and Asher

  • Gen 30:14-21 More children born to Leah.

Issachar, Zebulan, and Dinah

·         Gen 30:22-24 Rachel, the love of his life, gave birth to Joseph.

7. ‘If I have found favor in your sight’ was a cultural statement that would be said before making a request to someone who appeared to have the upper hand in a situation.

8. Application:

·         Jacob kept his word to serve all his time and was a blessing to Laban even though Laban deceived him on his wedding night. (Keep your promises even if you don’t get what you bargained for.)

·         The way you serve will testify for or against you.

·         Be a blessing to those around you.
