Acts 2:5-16, 36-38

Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. The disciples were indeed under the influence of something outside their own power, but it was the influence of the Holy Spirit, not of wine.

2. In Matthew 16:19 Jesus said, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven”, here in Acts 2, Peter is using the ‘keys’ to open the door of the kingdom of heaven to the Jews.

3. Pentecost means fiftieth.

4. Pentecost was 50 days after Passover.

5. Pentecost in the Old Testament was also known as the Feast of Weeks to celebrate the first fruits of wheat harvest (See Exodus 34:22).

6. The people responded to the sound, not the fire. It was the sound that drew the attention of the people to the 120 believers (Acts 1:15).

7. What attracted you to become a believer?

8. God brought people from all the known world to the disciples for Pentecost.

9. Peter’s message used the scriptures to explain what they were witnessing by the power of the Holy Spirit.

10. People who ridicule something they don’t understand often toss out wild accusations.

11. “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” 1 Corinthians 2:14

12. Application:

  • The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is instantaneous at conversion. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is the result of allowing God full control of your life.

  • “...be filled with the Spirit.” Ephesians 5:18

  • The spiritually dead will scoff in the presence of spiritual truth from God (1 Corinthians 2:14). The spiritually receptive will be inquisitive.

  • Peter’s message applies to us today:

  • Our sin put Jesus on the cross.

  • We respond by repenting.

  • Baptism publicly identifies you as a follower of Jesus.

  • Take time to thank God for the salvation He provides through Jesus.
