Exodus 14:19-31

Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Our journey of faith is mixed with doubt and disobedience, just like Israel’s journey through the wilderness to the promised land.

2. The God who has delivered you from sin will not allow you to be overtaken by the enemy. See Philippians 1:6 and John 10:28

3. The deliverance of the Israelite's depended on their trusting the LORD by walking down a path with a wall of water on each side.

4. In the face of being destroyed by an army of superior weapons and a larger number of fighting men, Moses demonstrated his faith by instructing the people to, ‘not be afraid’ and to ‘stand firm’ (don’t scatter).

5. The forces of evil can not prevent God from accomplishing his purpose.

6. The destruction of the Egyptian army: (Verses 4, 18)

  • Brought glory to God- People’s attention was directed to what the LORD had done.

  • The Egyptians ‘knew’ the LORD through judgment.

7. God protected his people by positioning himself between the Pharaoh’s army and his people.

8. God provided for his people:

  • A dry path.

  • Light to move in the night.

  • Barrier to prevent Pharaoh’s army from overtaking them.

9. God fought against Pharaoh’s army:

  • Barrier that prevented them from attacking.

  • Darkness on their side of the cloud.

  • Confusion.

  • Wheels came off their chariots.

10. Losses: (See verses 7, 9, 28)

                   Israel           0

                   Pharaoh      All chariots of Egyptians

                                      All horsemen

                                      All troops

11. As a result of the LORD’s deliverance, the Israelites:

  • Feared (reverenced) the LORD.

  • Put their trust in the LORD.

  • Trusted God’s servant Moses to lead them.

12. In response to God’s salvation, the Israelites worshiped by singing a song of praise.                                                                                                    Exodus 15:1-18

13. In response to God’s salvation, Miriam, Aaron’s sister, led the women to praise God by singing and dancing. Exodus 15:20-21

14. It is natural for new converts to praise God for delivering them from sin.

15. The way of salvation for the Hebrews became the way of judgment for the Egyptians.                                                                                                 Dr. Kevin Shrum

16. At the point in time when Moses told the people that they would never again see the Egyptians who were coming after them, God had not yet told Moses what to do.

17. God lead Israel into the desert:  (Exodus 13:18)

  • Where they would be tested and tried.

  • Where they would learn to trust the LORD.

  • Where God would speak to them and give them the Law.

  • To experience God’s power, love, and mercy.

  • Give them tools to make the LORD known to all the earth.

  • Wilderness/desert experience prepares you for service. (Joseph, Moses, David, Jesus, etc.)

  • To transform the Israelites from a slave nation into a free people.

  • To get ‘Egypt’ out of the people.

  • To bring glory to his name.

18. Paul declares, “If God is for us, who is against us?” Romans 8:31

19. “and call upon me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me. Psalm 50:15

20. “no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed,” Isaiah 54:17a

Application:

  • God guards His people as well as guides them during their daily walk with Him.

    • [However, that does not always mean His children are kept away from danger. Hebrews 11:36-37]

  • God has the power to open up a path of deliverance when no other way exists.

  • Seeing God’s power at work solidifies your faith in Him.

  • Godly leadership will lead you to refocus in a crisis.
