Isaiah 31

1. Isaiah 31:1 is the fifth woe in chapters 28-33. Woe is a term that expresses deep sorrow and grief like that expressed at a funeral.

2. God is able to protect His people from enemies. Dr. Hearson

3. The evil doers in verse 2 is referring to Judah who is seeking help from Egypt rather than turning to ‘The Holy One of Israel’ (v1).

4. Horses and chariots were the most powerful instruments of war at this time in history.

5. Isaiah was saying to Judah that looking to the God of Israel for protection would make them secure, not trusting in the best technology to make war.

6. The magnitude of the army and its equipment is no match for the God of Israel.

  • Israel vs Pharaoh's army at the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21-30)

  • David vs Goliath (1 Samuel 17:45-50)

  • Gideon's 300 men vs the Midianite army (Judges 7-8)

  • Jerusalem when Hezekiah was king vs Sennacherib (2 Kings 19:35-36)

  • Joshua vs Jericho (Joshua 7)

7. Verse 4 paints a picture where the lion represents God and the shepherds are the foreign armies. The shepherds are not successful in scaring the Lion away. God is the protector of Mount Zion.

8. Verse 5 paints a picture of God hovering over Jerusalem to defend and deliver it from the invading armies.

9. God, in His mercy and grace, calls out to those who stray away from Him to return and discard the sinful practices that caused them to go astray.

10. Returning to God (revival) is placing yourself under God’s umbrella of protection.

11. Revival has 2 parts; turning back to God and turning away from sinful practices.

12. Verses 4-9 were fulfilled in the past when the angel of the LORD killed 185,00 in the Assyrian camp of soldiers. (See 2 Kings 19:35-36, Read all of 2 Kings 19 for the whole story.)

13. Verses 4-9 will have a future fulfillment in the time of the Tribulation. Believers Bible Commentary

14. John 10:28-29 guarantee that the children of God are secure in His hand.

“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.”

15. In God’s plan, the goal is always restoration and redemption. Dr. Hearson

16. You can expect to receive God’s protection as long as you position yourself behind His shield.
