Lessons Learned
Romans 6:1-14
1. Chapter 5:20-21 concludes with the thought that God’s grace exceeds the sinfulness of man.
2. Chapter 6:1 raises the question:
• If God’s grace exceeds the sinfulness of man, should Christians indulge in sin to
highlight the grace of God?
3. In verse 2 Paul emphatically answers NO! And asks a probing question, “How can we
who died to sin still live in it?” (Your lifestyle matters to God).
4. Every Christian needs to reflect on the question, “Am I dragging the name of Jesus
through the mud?”
5. True repentance means you are walking away from the sin of your past.
6. Christianity is: Dr. Bob Utley
• A daily walk, not a decision.
• A lifestyle, not an emotion.
• A relationship with Jesus Christ that issues in Christ-like living.
7. Verses 3-10 present the facts (knowledge) to be considered to answer the questions of verses 1 & 2. (The keyword ‘know’ is used in verses 3, 6, & 9).
8. Verses 11-12 instruct you how you should think about the questions. (The keyword is
‘consider’, ‘reckon’ or ‘count’ which means to add up the evidence).
9. Verse 13 gives you the practical steps you should take to protect yourself from sin. (The keyword is ‘present’ which means to offer yourself).
10. Verse 14 the conclusion: Sin does not rule over you, you are not under the law but
under grace.
11. The position of the Christian is that they are dead to sin according to their standing
with God in Christ.
12. The practice of a Christian is the reality of the way they live their everyday life. The
practice of every Christian should be moving closer to their position in Christ as they
mature in their Christian walk.
13. Paul teaches about the position of Christians:
• Your sinful nature died and was buried with Christ.
• You have new life—You have passed from death to life.
• Your body will be resurrected—Just like Jesus.
• Sin is no longer your master.
• Sin has no place in your life.
• God’s grace is on you.
14. Paul’s advice on how to live out the Christian lifestyle in your daily life:
• Do not give the members of your body as tools for sinful activity.
• Do give the members of your body for use as tools for righteousness.
15. Since your position has changed from God’s wrath and death to life, this should
motivate you to use your energy to live for Him.
16. Verses 3 & 4 are the only verses in Romans to mention baptism.
17. Baptism is a picture of death and burial of Jesus (going under the water) and the
resurrection of Jesus (coming up out of the water).
18. Your salvation experience represents your desire to die to sin and leave behind your old life in order to live for God and follow Him in a new life.
19. “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by
testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and
perfect.” Romans 12:1-2 (ESV)
20. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15 (ESV)
21. “By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.” 1 John 2:3-6 (NASB)
