Review
Lesson 1 Romans 1:1-15 Introduction- Paul had longed for the opportunity to preach the gospel in Rome but was prevented from going, so he wrote a letter.
Romans 1:16-17 The theme to the book- The righteousness of God is revealed in
the gospel.
Lesson 2 Romans 1:18-32 Gentiles are exposed to the general revelation of God thru
creation yet reject God and worship idols and creation rather than the Creator.
Lesson 3 Romans 2:1-29 The self-righteous Jews who have the advantage of God’s Law do not earn favor with God by keeping the rituals of Jewish tradition and the Law.
Lesson 4 Romans 3:21-31 Righteousness through faith—Jews and Gentiles alike receive the righteousness of God by faith (believing) in Jesus Christ who paid the penalty for the sin of mankind.
Romans 4:1-25 Abraham is the example of being justified by faith before the
Law and circumcision.
Lesson 5 Romans 5:1-11 The benefits of those who have been justified.
Lesson 6 Romans 6:1-14 The Christian’s position is dead to sin, the Christian’s walk is to become like Christ.
Romans 7:14-25 A description of the struggle believers have with sin.
Lesson 8 Romans 8 Living by the Spirit.
Romans 8 begins with no condemnation—Ends with no separation.
Justification—Sanctification—Glorification.
Assurance that God will not reject us in the end.
Lesson 9 Romans 10:5-15 Human responsibility (Jew and Gentile) to the gospel and with the gospel after it is believed.
Lesson 10 Romans 11 God’s promises to Israel are irrevocable. God will redeem Israel
after the fullness of the Gentiles has come.
Lesson 11 Romans 12 Living out the gospel.
Lesson 12 Romans 13 The Christians civil, social, and personal behavior
Civil-Honor and obey authority.
Social-Pay your debts and love your neighbor.
Personal behavior- Live as people preparing to meet Jesus—
the time is short.
Lessons Learned
Romans 13
1. Paul wrote to the Romans about submitting to government authority when Nero was
ruler of Rome.
2. ‘Be subject to’ means to place yourself in a subordinate relationship to governoring
authority.
3. “The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord;
He turns it wherever He wishes.” Proverbs 21:1 (NASB)
4. Resisting government authority is resisting God who appointed the ruler for that time.
5. Jesus told Pilate that he had no power over Jesus that was not given to him from God.
(See John 19:11)
6. In the Old Testament God allowed foreign rulers to afflict his people in order to turn
them back to himself when his people strayed after other gods.
7. Resisting authority will result in paying a penalty.
8. The ‘sword’ in verse 6 likely refers to capital punishment. (Compare Genesis 9:6)
9. Two reasons to submit to government authority:
Avoid God’s wrath expressed through government authority.
Doing what is right allows you to have a clear conscience.
10. Paying your taxes give the government the resources to do their job.
11. Pay your taxes even though some of the money will fund purposes that are not godly.
(I’m sure that was the case for Rome when Paul wrote this.)
12. Honor and respect the position held by authorities, even when you do not agree with their policy.
13. Pray for those in authority over you. (See 1 Timothy 2:1-2)
14. New Testament references about God and government.
Titus 3:1 Be submissive to rulers.
1 Peter 2:13-17 Verse 17 sums up the passage, “...fear God, honor the emperor.”

16. God ordains rulers to bring about his purposes. Romans 9:17, Exodus 9:16
17. Christians are to display God’s love in their relationships with all people.
18. Loving people means you have their best interests in mind, not your selfish desires to use them.
19. Love is a verb.
20. In verse 9 Paul quoted from the 10 commandments, #7, #6, #8, #10, and also
Leviticus 19:18.
21. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a
22. Christians are to pay their bills on time. Don’t neglect paying your debts.
23. In verse 11:
‘Sleep’ is a metaphor for a life of moral carelessness and laxity.
‘Salvation’ is referring to the future time when Jesus returns to claim his bride.
24. Just as you prepare for special events by wearing special clothes, Christians are to
prepare for the return of Christ by putting on the spiritual armorer to protect them from falling into sinful practices.
25. Just as a bride seeks to have everything about her appearance to be perfect for her wedding, the Christian should prepare for the return of Christ by eliminating sinful
behaviors and ‘put on the Lord Jesus Christ’.
26. “In Romans 13 Paul gives practical instructions on how a believer should live under an unfriendly government.” Ray Pritchard
27. When there is no ruling authority, “...everyone did what was right in their own eyes.”

28. “Christians must avoid useless expense, and be careful not to contract any debts they have not the power to discharge.” Matthew Henry
29. “It is Paul's claim that if a man honestly seeks to discharge this debt of love, he will
automatically keep all the commandments.” William Barclay
30. Each individual Christian needs to take inventory to determine if they are keeping up in their debt to love one another.
31. “We should also keep in mind that if Christ does not return in our time, he will
certainly come individually for us in death. Each ache, each pain, each gray hair,
each new wrinkle, each funeral is a reminder that it is later than it has ever been

33. “Put on your uniform to identify your team and yourself. Those who watch the race
will know who you are and so will your team mates who are running with you.”
