Philemon

1. Philemon is the shortest letter written by Paul recorded in the New Testament.
2. The name Onesimus means useful.
3. Philemon was the owner of the slave Onesimus. Philemon v6
4. Philemon lived in Colossae.
5. Tychicus delivered the letters to the church at Colossae and to Philemon.
6. Tychicus was part of Paul’s ministry team. Acts 20:4
7. Onesimus returned to Colossae with Tychicus. Col. 4:9
8. Philemon’s home was used as a place for the church to meet. V2
9. Because of the political status of Christianity, there were no buildings dedicated to church services. Christians met in private homes. ESV study notes v2.
10. Apphia may have been Philemon’s wife; Archippus may have been Philemon’s son. ESV study note v2.
11. According to Col. 4:17, Archippus may have had a significant ministry in Colossae. ESV study note v2.
12. Philemon was a blessing to the saints in Colossae. V7
13. Onesimus was a convert to Christianity due to the prison ministry of Paul. V10

16. Christians are to do good as a matter of their own free will and not from compulsion or obligation.
17. Believers forgive others since then too have been forgiven.
18. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Gal. 3:28
