Introduction to Job
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. Job is referenced as a person in Ezekiel 14:14, 20, and in James 5:11.
2. Job is quoted by Paul in Romans 11:35 (Job 41:11) and 1 Corinthians 3:19 (Job 5:13).
3. Job lived 140 years. See Job 42:16
4. Evidence that Job lived in the era of the patriarchs:
His life span
The assessment of his riches is described in terms of animals and servants.
Job’s priestly function within his family.
5. The author and time of writing of Job is unknown.
6. Most scholars believe the land of Uz was to the east and south of Israel, usually associated with the land of Edom.
7. The book of Job raises the question, “Why do the righteous suffer?” In the end, the lesson learned was that the sufferer may never know the reason for suffering, but must learn to trust in the Sovereign God. John MacArthur
8. Satan’s accusation before God is that Job was faithful to God because of God’s blessing on Job. If Job were to encounter suffering in place of blessing, he would stop serving God.
9. True faith in God is founded on the rock, Jesus Christ, and is not shaken by circumstances.
10. Job is a story of riches-to-rags-to-riches.
11. Job or his friends never become aware of the origin of his suffering.

14. We can see the following truths in Job’s experience: John MacArthur
· There are matters going on in heaven with God that believers know nothing about; yet, they affect their lives.
· Even the best effort at explaining the issues of life can be useless.
· God’s people do suffer. Bad things happen all the time to good people, so one cannot judge a person’s spirituality by his painful circumstances or successes.
· Even though God seems far away, perseverance in faith is a most noble virtue since God is good and one can safely leave his life in His hands.
· The believer in the midst of suffering should not abandon God, but draw near to Him, so out of the fellowship can come the comfort—without the explanation.
· Suffering may be intense, but it will ultimately end for the righteous, and God will bless abundantly.
15. Notable verses in Job.
1:21 “And he said, “Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
13:15 “Though he slay me, I will hope in him;”
14:14 “If a man dies, shall he live again?”
19:25 “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.”
42:2 “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.”
42:5-6 “I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you;
therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”
