Lessons Learned
Ecclesiastes 3:1-15
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. Season in verse 1 means a time when something occurs or happens.
2. Time means ‘a fixed or appointed time.’ Everything happens at the appointed time which has been determined for it.
3. The emphasis of this chapter is on divine appointment. It speaks of the mystery of human effort (“under heaven”) as it is compared with the sovereignty of God. In Wisdom Literature “appointed time” is often “appropriate time.” Dr. Bob Utley
4. The word ‘time’ occurs 31 times in verses 1-17.
5. “Humans are time bound, but they are wired for eternity.” Dr. Dan Estes
6. Verse 9 is a repetition of the question from 1:3, but now Solomon provides an answer in verse 11.
7. A wise person stewards time, realizing God controls all things.
8. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 ESV
9. “A word fitly spoken
is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.” Proverbs 25:11 ESV
10. In verses 1-8 Solomon summarized the common activities of life.
11. Verses 1-8 point out that God created the heaven and the earth with laws of design and regularity. John MacArthur
12. There are 14 pairs, a positive paired with a negative, but each has an appointed time in life.
13. “So teach us to number our days
that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12 ESV
14. “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” Romans 12:15 ESV
15. Application:
God is the primary actor in the world and we are dependent on Him.
The seasons of our lives are not within our control.
God is using the current season of your life to prepare you for the next.
