 Lessons Learned

Ecclesiastes 4:13-5:7

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Wise people listen to the godly counsel of spiritual leaders and Christian friends.

2. “Keep hold of instruction; do not let go;
guard her, for she is your life.” Proverbs 4:13

3. “Listen to advice and accept instruction,
that you may gain wisdom in the future. Proverbs 19:20

4. “and you say, ‘How I hated discipline,
    and my heart despised reproof!
I did not listen to the voice of my teachers
or incline my ear to my instructors.’” Proverbs 5:12-13

5. Leaders have a target on their back, someone is always ready to bring them down.

6. Being ‘top dog’ does not bring meaning to life. Jesus said, “Seek first His Kingdom and righteousness.” Matthew 6:33

7. The word ‘fool’ or ‘foolish’ is used 23 times in Ecclesiastes.

8. A balance to Ecclesiastes 5:1-3 is Hebrews 4:15-16,“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

9. Vow- Making an oath to God promising to offer something to Him if He would act on behalf of the individual making the vow. Dr. Matt Capp

10. Making a vow is a voluntary action. No one is required to make a vow.

11. Examples of vows:

  • 1 Samuel 1:9-28 Hannah.

  • Genesis 28:20 Jacob.

  • Numbers 6:1-21 Conditions for a Nazarite vow.

  • Judges 11:30-39 Jephtha’s tragic vow.

  • Acts 18:18 Paul.

12. Application:

  • Listen to the godly counsel of spiritual leaders over you and Christian friends.

  • True worship originates in the heart and then passes through the lips.

  • As New Testament Christians, we can come boldly before the throne of grace as we submit to His will.

  • Do not make a vow (promise) you will be unwilling to pay.
