Introduction to Micah

1. Micah means ‘Who is Like the LORD?’
2. Micah prophesied from about 740 B.C. to 687 B.C.
3. Micah’s home is the small town of Moresheth which is located approximately 25 miles southwest of Jerusalem.
4. Micah, Hosea, Amos, and Isaiah all prophesied during the same period of time, but not necessarily all at the same time.
5. Micah directed his words primarily to the southern kingdom of Judah.
6. One third of the book targets the sins of the people.
One third of the book looks at the punishment of God to come.
One third of the book promises hope for the faithful after judgment.

7. Micah 5:2 is the prophecy of the birthplace of Jesus.
8. Jesus quoted Micah 7:6 to his disciples in Matthew 10:35-36
9. The book of Micah oscillates between judgment and hope.
10. Micah is the shortened form of Micaiah.
11. It was a time of economic prosperity for the wealthy class, but the poor were exploited and abused.
12. It was a time of much outward religious activity, but very little faith.

1. Seer is another name for prophets they were supposed to be able to see visions.
2. Divination is man’s attempt to control their own lives instead of trusting God. Dr. Bob Utley
3. Zion in verse 10 is speaking about the religious significance of Jerusalem.
4. Those who reject the moral claims of God on their conduct can look for no comfort from His promises. Dr. David J. Clark
5. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21 (ESV)
6. “If anyone returns evil for good,
evil will not depart from his house.” Proverbs 17:13 (ESV)
7. “Woe to those who call evil good
and good evil,

who put bitter for sweet

9. Application:
· God sees and will act in judgment of those who call evil ‘good’ and good ‘evil.’
· Willful sin blocks God from working in your life.
· A spiritual pedigree (Christian parents, baptism, tithing, teaching, etc.) is not the basis to gain favor with God. God desires a personal relationship with you.
