Lessons Learned
Daniel 9:20-27
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. Daniel 9:24-27 outlines the future history of Israel.
2. “Daniel had asked about Israel’s return to their homeland, but instead, God gave him the revelation of the 70 weeks which was to assure Daniel that God will fulfill His covenant promise to the nation.” Dr. Harold Hochner
3. Daniel’s prayer is given twice as much attention as the answer to his prayer.
4. Eschatology is the study of last things.
5. “Twenty-five percent of the Bible was predictive prophecy at the time it was written and about fifty percent of those prophecies have already been fulfilled.” Unknown author
6. “...and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.” 2 Thessalonians 2:3b-4
7. “...how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is, Jesus who rescues us from the wrath to come.” 1 Thessalonians 1:9b-10
8. “Blessed is the one who reads, and those who hear the words of the prophecy and keep the things which are written in it; for the time is near.” Revelation 1:3
9. “The six purposes for the 70 weeks: The first 3 are fulfilled in principle at Christ’s first coming, in full at His return.” John MacArthur
10. Outline of the prophecy:
· A comprehensive picture of the entire prophecy. V24
· The first 69 ‘sevens’ representing 483 years. V25
· The events between the 69th and 70th ‘sevens’. V26
· The conclusion is punctuated by the 70th ‘seven’ of 7 years. V27
11. Daniel’s prayer is about the nation of Israel, therefore the answer to his prayer is in reference to Israel.
12. Jesus spoke of the ‘times of the Gentiles,’ in Luke 21:24, “and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.”
13. Application:
The day is coming when all evil will be destroyed.
Since God is going to keep His Old Testament promises to an unfaithful Israel, we can also count on God to keep His New Testament promises with believers.
This prophecy points to a time where Jesus will rule as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
