Lessons Learned
Matthew 28:1-10; 16-20
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. Jesus rose from the grave on Sunday, the first day of the week.
2. The women knew exactly the tomb in which Jesus had been buried. Matthew 27:61
3. The women have three pieces of evidence to relay to the disciples.
A. The message from the angel.
B. Witness of seeing the empty tomb.
C. They had seen and touched Jesus.
4. Worship is the way you respond to the risen crucified Lord.
5. The obedience of the women to the angel’s command to ‘go quickly and tell the disciples’ put them in position to see the risen Jesus.
6. Matthew began his gospel with a promise that Immanuel (God with us) had come (Matthew 1:23), he closes the gospel with the promise of Messiah’s abiding presence (Matthew 28:20b). Dr. Bob Bunn
7. Jesus began the great commission with the promise of His power and concluded it with the promise of His presence. Dr. Bob Bunn
8. The guards were ‘scared to death’ by the presence of the angel accompanied by the earthquake.
9. The angel speaks to the women—not the guards.
· “He is risen as He said.”
· “Come see”
· “Go Tell”
· “You will see Him in Galilee”
10. Looking for Jesus in the wrong place—He is not here.
11. Jesus spoke of His resurrection before His death—even the chief priests and Pharisees knew that Jesus had said He would rise in three days. Matthew 27:62-66
12. Baptism does not provide salvation, but it does proclaim salvation as an act of obedience. Dr. Bob Bunn
13. The Great Commission is for all believers.
14. The Great Commission is very similar to what the angel told the women.
15. The resurrection and ascension of Jesus is God’s guarantee to mankind that the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus on the cross was sufficient to pay for the sins of those who in faith put their trust in Him.
16. The resurrection is the cornerstone of the Christian faith, the hope of the Christian.
17. “Easter is the ‘Superbowl’ for the church.” Pastor Drew
18. New converts need to be taught God’s word. They can not be obedient to the truth until they have been taught the truth.
19. “...knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.” 1 Peter 1:18-21
20. Application:
· The risen Jesus was verified by lots of people—we can trust that it is true.
· Men will not die for a lie—the apostle John is the only disciple thought to have died a natural death, all the others were killed due to their testimony of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.
· Each follower of Christ is to make disciples and teach them to obey the teaching of Jesus.
