Lessons Learned
1 Kings 12:6-19

1. The parallel passage is 2 Chronicles 10:1-18
2. Rehoboam was Solomon’s oldest son by his favorite wife. Dr. Bob Utley
3. The ‘yoke’ refers to the burden that was placed on the people to sustain the daily needs of the king’s administration.
4. Rehoboam’s increased oppression on Israel is reminiscent of how the Pharaoh in Egypt responded to Moses’ request to release Israel to worship God.
5. Rehoboam's faith is never referenced.
6. Rehoboam proved to be selfish and arrogant.
7. Rehoboam had grown up in a luxurious environment and could not imagine anything less.
8. “Where there is no guidance, a people falls,
but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” Proverbs 11:14
9. “Without counsel plans fail,
but with many advisers they succeed.” Proverbs 15:22
10. “Plans are established by counsel;
by wise guidance wage war.” Proverbs 20:18
11. “for by wise guidance you can wage your war,
and in abundance of counselors there is victory.” Proverbs 24:6
12. “No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel
can avail against the Lord.” Proverbs 21:30
13 Application:
· The Bible confirms the wisdom of seeking counsel when making decisions. (See #’s 8-12)
· Decisions made out of selfish desires and arrogance leave God out of your life and hurt more people than they help.
· God is in control of history. (See #12)
