Lessons Learned

1 Kings 11:1-13

1. Moabites and Ammonites are the descendants of Lot through the incestuous relationship with his daughters. They resided east of Israel.

2. Edomites are the descendants of Esau and resided south-east of Israel.

3. Sidonians- Noah the father of Ham the father of Canaan the father of Sidon. They occupied the Phoenician territory to the north of Israel along the coastline.

4. Hittites were one of the seven nations in Canaan that Israel was to completely drive out of the land. Deut. 20:16-17

5. Ashtoreth is the female associate of Baal and was represented by carved wooden poles on a worship platform symbolizing the tree of life. Deut. 16:21 specifically forbids Asherah worship.

6. Milcom also known as Molech. This idol was a giant metal statue of a man with a bull’s head. In addition to sexual rituals, worship included child sacrifices of the firstborn. Deut. 18:10 and 12:31 expressly forbids child sacrifice.

7. ‘High place’ refers to sacred shrine on a hilltop where people worshiped their god.

8. Chemosh- The chief god of the Moabites that also involved child sacrifice. Probably a war god.

9. “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God;” 2 Corinthians 6:14-16a

10. “Blessed is the man
    who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
    and on his law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1:1-2

11. Application:

·        Neglecting to follow God’s word in one area of life makes it easier to duplicate in other areas.

·        Becoming partners with ungodly people will lead you to make spiritual compromise.

·        Examine yourself. Ask God to reveal anything that is distracting you from your relationship with God.

·        God holds His followers accountable for their disobedience.

Chapter 9

1-9 The Lord appeared a second time to Solomon. The Lord is pleased with the temple and repeated the promise that if Solomon walked before the Lord as David his father did, then God would establish his throne forever. If Solomon failed, then Israel would be cut off from the land.

10-28 After 20 years of building the temple (7 years) and his own palace (13 years) Solomon gave Hiram 20 cities for supplying timber for the building projects.

Solomon rebuilt some previously destroyed cities using slaves of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. (Deut 20:16-17 these peoples were to be completely destroyed from the promised land.)

Three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar he built to the Lord.

Solomon had a fleet of ships that brought 420 talents (75 pounds or $850 million at today's prices). “...nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold.” Deut 17:17b

Chapter 10 The Queen of Sheba

1-13 The queen of Sheba came to test Solomon to find out if what she had heard about him was true. She was WOWed by Solomon’s wealth and knowledge. She blesses the God of Israel (V9) for making Solomon king and gave Solomon 120 talents of gold, a great amount of spices, and precious stones.

14-29 An accounting of Solomon’s wealth

666 talents of gold each year.

Solomon made gold-plated shields.

Solomon made for himself a gold-plated ivory throne

All the drinking vessels were gold

Everyone sought the presence of Solomon and brought him gifts.

Solomon collected 1400 chariots and 12000 horsemen. Deut. 17:16

Chapter 11 Solomon turned from the Lord

v1 Solomon loved many foreign women. Deut 17:17a

Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, Hittite Deut. 7:1-5

v4 Solomon’s heart was not wholly true to the Lord.

v5 Solomon went after foreign gods.

v7 Solomon built high places for Chemosh and Molech.

v8 Solomon built high places for all his foreign wives.
