Introduction to 1 Kings & 2 Kings

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. These 2 books cover the history of the monarchy in Israel and Judah from 971 BC to 561 BC (410 years).

2. King Saul and most of King David is covered in 1 Samuel 9 through 2 Samuel 24.

3. 1 Kings begins with David transitioning the kingdom to his son Solomon.

4. The author of 1 Kings and 2 Kings is unknown.

5. The books are written as a historical narrative. A summary is given of each individual king’s rule and reign in Israel or Judah.

6. Besides being historical books, 1 Kings and 2 Kings also give spiritual analysis of the kings, did they serve the Lord or idols and how do they compare to king David.

7. Elijah (1 Kings) and Elisha (2 Kings) are prophets that point out a nation that is falling into ruin.

8. These books show how a strong nation that David had built drifted away from God and was eventually destroyed because of their great sinfulness.

9. The authors show how God tries to intervene in the lives of his people to draw them back to Himself.

10. God does not give up on His people, even in exile He promised a path for them to go back to their homeland.

Lessons Learned

1 Kings 3:4-15

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. 2 Chronicles 1:1-17 is a parallel passage for today’s text.

2. Be grateful for the blessings of God in your life.

3. The preface to this story in verse 3 says, ‘Solomon loved the LORD.’

4. Solomon was not perfect.

5. Take time to count the blessings from God that family who have gone before you received. Do these blessings also impact your life in any way?

6. Your faithfulness or lack of faithfulness will have an impact on the next generation.

7. A life lived within the will of God has meaning and purpose.

8. The events of this story are:

    Solomon worships—God speaks—Solomon prays—God answers—Solomon worships

(When God responds to your worship, worship in response to God.)

9. Application:

·        Worship precedes blessing from God.

·        God in His sovereignty has placed you in this time and place for His glory.

·        “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5 — We all qualify to ask God for wisdom.
