Lessons Learned
Amos 9
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. Amos 7:1- 9:15 records visions God gave Amos of the coming judgment of Israel.
2. Our system of justice is not perfect, but God’s is.
3. To be ‘shaken’ means that Israel was not on solid ground.
4. As creator of all things, God’s authority reigns in heaven and on earth.
5. Trying to hide from God is futile.
6. God’s purpose for judgment (discipline) is restoration. He wants to see people turn in repentance to Him.
7. God has placed you in time and space where you are for the purpose of bringing glory to His name. How are you doing?
8. Commentators believe Amos’ message was delivered between 760 BC and 755 BC. The Assyrians plundered and destroyed Samaria in 722BC. God gave Israel 33-38 years to repent before judgment came, but they would not. Don’t mistake God’s mercy for God’s grace.
9. “But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” 2 Timothy 2:19
10. Application:
· Those who deserve God’s judgment will not be able to hide or escape to avoid judgment.
· God is in charge of the events of the future. Believers need not fear what is to come.
· God will not allow the remnant to become lost when He filters the unrepentant out for judgment. See 2 Timothy 2:19
