Gospel of John 3:1-18

1. Pharisee means ‘separated ones.’ They were committed to keeping God’s laws as defined and explained in the oral tradition (Talmud). Dr. Bob Utley
2. ‘Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews’ means he was a member of the Sanhedrin.
3. The Sanhedrin, made up of Sadducees and Pharisees, was a group of 70 men plus the high priest who were the ‘spiritual’ authorities for Jewish life.
4. It is interesting that Nicodemus called Jesus, who had no rabbinical training, a Rabbi.
5. ‘Truly, truly’ (v. 3,5,11) is a way to emphasis the truth about the statement to follow.
6. The Kingdom of God is the place where God rules, God is king.
7. The story of the bronze serpent is in Numbers 21.
8. “For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:7-8
9. Do you look at things with spiritual eyes or with human logic and understanding?
10. We are fleshly (not spiritual) by nature, it takes the Spirit of God to transform our lives.
11. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
12. Application:
God’s love for us is much greater than we can comprehend. Romans 5:7-8
Believing and trusting that Jesus died to pay for your sin debt is essential for eternal life.
God’s Spirit moves in the heart of man to draw us to Him.
God has done all the work for our salvation. The only thing for us to do is believe.
