Lessons Learned

Gospel of John 4:7-26

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Verses 1-6 position Jesus at Jacob’s well in Samaria.

2. Samaritans:

  • Lived in the region between Judea and Galilee.

  • Were descendants of the Jews left in Israel (Northern Kingdom) after the exile of 722 B.C. who intermarried with the Assyrians who were moved in (2 Kings 17:24-31) to replace the exiles.

  • Because of the Gentile influence on the culture, strict Jews would travel around Samaria so they would not be defiled.

3. Living Water- In the Old Testament, living water was water running in a stream or from a spring. However, Jesus used the term to refer to spiritual life.

4. Jacob’s well is at the foot of Mount Gerizim.

5. The Samaritan’s Bible only contained the first five books of our Old Testament which they called the Pentateuch.

6. Rejecting portions of God’s revelation to man is dangerous.

7. The sixth hour is at noon according to Jewish time.

8. “Sincere and spiritual worship = the submission of all our nature to God.” Brian Bell

9. Worship is the spirit’s adoring occupation with God Himself, not merely in gratitude for His gifts, but because of what He is. It is this that the Father seeks. H. A. Ironside

10: Application:

  • Only Jesus can give meaning to your life that will satisfy your soul.

  • This story addresses the issue of God’s love for outcasts.

  • Worship is a daily activity where, by the way you engage in the activities of life you are declaring God to be your Savior, Lord, and worthy of all worship.

  • It is not where you worship, but who you worship in spirit and truth.
