Lessons Learned

Gospel of John 5:1-16

1. Jewish men were required to go to Jerusalem for these three feasts each year: (Deut. 16:16-17) Feast of Passover and Unleavened bread – Celebrating the exodus from Egypt.

·      Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) – Fifty days after Passover celebrating the first fruits of wheat harvest.

·      Feast of Tabernacles – Celebrating the first fruits of olive and grape harvest.

2. This man had been an invalid since before the birth of Jesus.

3. This man was waiting to be healed but did not realize the ‘Healer’ was talking with him.

4. Bethesda means ‘house of mercy.’

5. Verse three describes those around the pool as, ‘a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed.’

6. ‘Five roofed colonnades’ means there were five columns that held up a roofed area around the pool.

7. Accusations are often answered by blaming others.

8. When accused of doing wrong, do you shift blame to others?

9. Legalism crushes the spirit of God’s commands.

10. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” Exodus 20:8

11. When you are in the hot seat, do you soft pedal your relationship with God to gain favor with the authority?

12. “Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.” Romans 14:4

13. Application:

  • “Jesus does not command us without giving us the ability to carry out His instruction.” Dr. Jere Phillips

  • God deserves the honor and glory for all the blessings He brings into your life.

  • This text challenges you to consider if you have any legalistic rules whereby you judge the spirituality of others.
