Lessons Learned

Gospel of John 6:26-40

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Seal—(Think about a seal that represents an official document) is the way to prove the authenticity of the document. The seal means it is original, not a copy or a fake.

2. “Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4

3. “And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’” Mark 1:10-11

4. ‘Believe’ is used approximately (depending on which translation) 84 times in the book of John. This is more than any other book of the Bible.

5. “You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger…” Nehemiah 9:15

6. This text causes us to compare how we feed our spirit with how we feed our physical bodies. Is one malnourished?

7. Only God can satisfy your spiritual hunger and thirst.

8. The manna in the wilderness sustained physical life, it did not give life.

9. Only Jesus, the bread of life from heaven, gives life to that which was ‘dead in trespasses and sins.’ Ephesians 2:1

10. Believing the truth and not the lie is essential in order to gain eternal life:

  • Believe in Him whom He (God) has sent. John 6:29

  • ...believes in me shall never thirst. John 6:35

  • Believes in Him (Jesus) should have eternal life. John 6:40

  • Whoever believes has eternal life. John 6:47

11. Application:

  • People must examine their motives for following Jesus.

  • Jesus is the only source of nourishment for your spirit.

  • Everyone who comes to Jesus in repentance and faith is given eternal life.

  • Believers are kept safe by the power of God.

    • V39 “…that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me.”

    • V40 “...everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

    • 1 Peter 1:5 “who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
