Gospel of John 7:14-29

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Review:

John 1 - Deity of Jesus—Baptism—Calling His first disciples.

John 2 - Water turn to wine—Cleansing the temple.

John 3 - Nicodemus (You must be born again).

John 4 - Jesus left Judea—The Samaritan woman at the well.

John 5 - Healing by the pool—Jesus defending healing on the Sabbath.

John 6 - Feeding 5000—Jesus explains He is the Bread of (Spiritual) Life.

John 7 - Jesus at the feast of Tabernacles.

2. Jewish men were required to go to Jerusalem for these three feasts each year: (Deut. 16:16-17)

  • Feast of Passover and Unleavened bread – Celebrating the exodus from Egypt.

  • Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) – Fifty days after Passover celebrating the first fruits of wheat harvest.

  • Feast of Tabernacles – Reminding them of their ancestors’ time in the wilderness while also celebrating the first fruits of olive and grape harvest.

3. John’s gospel focuses on Jesus’ ministry in Jerusalem. Dr. Bob Utley

4. The people in today’s text identified Jesus as:

  • Jesus was a good man. V12

  • Jesus was a deceiver. V12

  • Jesus was a demon-possessed man. V20

  • Jesus was the Christ. V26

  • Jesus was the Prophet. V40

What you decide about who Jesus is has eternal consequences.

5. Later, Jewish literature calls Jesus a deceiver. ESV Study Bible note.

6. John 5:18 is the first mention of the Jews seeking to kill Jesus because:

  • Breaking the Sabbath by healing on that day.

  • Called God His own father, making himself equal with God.

7. “And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.” Leviticus 12:3

8. The people in Jerusalem for the feast of Tabernacles:

  • Pilgrims that traveled for the feast.

  • Locals who lived there.

  • Religious authorities who hated Jesus.

  • People who believed Jesus.

9. People were afraid to speak their minds about Jesus because the religious authorities might ban them from the temple.

10. “Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.” Galatians 2:16

11. Application:

  • When you know what God’s will for your life is, don’t allow others, no matter how close they are to you, to change your course.

  • Legalism is a trap that gives the false assurance of being accepted by God and condemns those who do not conform. Do you judge the spirituality of others by your unwritten rules?

  • Teachers/Preachers can be evaluated by whom their teaching glorifies.
