Mark 13:24-37

Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Calendar of end-time events:

1)    Rapture of the church—Meet the Lord in the air. 1 Thess. 4:17—This could happen at any time.

2)    Tribulation—Antichrist (false Messiah, man of sin) rules during this 7-year period. Sin will multiply while God rains down judgment.

3)    Jesus returns as King of Kings to defeat the anti-Christ. Rev. 19:11,16, 19-20

4)    Jesus reigns on earth for 1000 years while Satan is bound. Rev. 20:2-4

5)    Satan was released but defeated and cast into the Lake of Fire. Rev. 20:11-15

6)    Great White Throne judgment for unbelievers. Rev. 20:11-15

7)    New heaven, new earth, and new Jerusalem. Rev. 21

2. Parallel passages Matthew 24:1-35 and Luke 21:5-33.

3. In this passage Jesus is answering two questions that the disciples had asked Jesus.

  • When will these things (destruction of the temple) happen? (v 4)

  • What will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled? (v 4)

4. This passage is called the Olivet Discourse because Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives when He was teaching.

5. An outline of Mark chapter 13.

  1. Destruction of the temple. (v 1-4)—This took place in 70 AD.

  2. False messiahs and disasters. (v 5-8)—This continues to take place today.

  3. Persecution predicted. (v 9-13)—This continues to take place today.

  4. The great tribulation. (v 14-23)

  5. The coming of the Son of Man. (v 24-27)

  6. The parable of the fig tree. (v 28-31)

  7. No one knows the day or hour of the Lord’s return. (v 32-37)

6. Daniel 9:24-27 gives us a peek into God’s timetable. It describes 70 weeks (sevens) of years for a total of 490 years. The 490 years begins with the decree to rebuild Jerusalem (9:25) which was issued by Cyrus king of Persia and is divided into three sections 7+62+1. At the end of the 69th week, the Anointed One (Jesus) will be cut off (die) (9:26). The last week will be the time of tribulation (9:27). The time between the 69th week and the 70th week is known as the ‘time of the Gentiles’ (Luke 21:24) or the ‘church age.’

7. The return of Jesus will be preceded by cosmic disturbances like the world has never seen. For Old Testament references see: Joel 2:10, 31; Isaiah 13:6-11, 24:23.

8. The attention of the world will be turned from the charisma of the anti-Christ to the Lord of Lords and King of Kings (Rev 17:14) when Jesus appears in great power and glory.

9. “As Christian believers today, we are not looking for “signs” of His coming; we are looking for Him! But people living during the Tribulation will be able to watch these things occur and will know that His coming is near. This assurance will help them to endure and to be good witnesses.” Wiersbe

10. Jesus ascended into heaven in a cloud Acts 1:9. Jesus will return in a cloud Acts 1:11 and Mark 13:26.

11. The bodily Resurrection of the saints will occur at the time of the rapture. “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.” 1 Thess. 4:16-17

12. “Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.” Revelation 1:7

13. Four times in this passage Jesus warned the disciples to be vigilant.

  • Watch out that no one deceives you. 13:4

  • Be on Guard! Be alert! 13:33

  • Therefore, keep watch. 13:35

  • I say to everyone: Watch! 13:37

14. Application:

·        There is coming a day when Jesus will return to rule and reign on the earth.

·        God has not given a date but a sign to encourage the elect of His imminent return.

·        It is our responsibility to be prepared:

1.     First by believing the gospel.

2.     Then by anticipating His return.
