Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Parallel passages are Matthew 26:36-46 and Luke 22:39-46.

2. “Prayer is not to get God to change his mind. Prayer is to align your desires and will to God’s desires and will.” Dr. Rodney L Cooper

3. No matter how willing a person may be, the flesh is still weak. Personal Study Guide

4. If you are committed to God’s will, it will impact your decisions in life.

5. Jesus experienced human emotions just like we do.

6. Judas knew a lot about Jesus after three years of following him but his actions (betrayal and theft; John 12:4,6) denies that he had a relationship with Jesus.

7. Judas was rewarded by the chief priests with what Judas loved most, money. Matthew 26:15

8. Judas’ willingness to betray Jesus gave the chief priests the opportunity to arrest Jesus outside the eyes of the public.

9. Gethsemane- comes from a Hebrew word meaning ‘press of oils.’

- A garden located outside the city of Jerusalem across the Kidron valley on the lower slope of the Mount of Olives.

10. Jesus first left 8 disciples, telling them he was going to pray. Jesus took Peter, James, and John a little farther and asked them to keep watch.

11. ‘Keep watch’ means, pray for me while I am praying. See Matthew 26:40

12. Jesus displays his humanity in the garden by being in great distress and troubled.

13. Jesus reached out to his closest disciples for support, ‘keep watch with me.’

14. Prayer is vital in time of distress and trouble.

15. ‘Abba’ is the Jewish word for ‘daddy.’ Is your relationship with God such that you pray using intimate terms?

16. The ‘cup’ Jesus refereed to is a metaphor which refers to God’s wrath, of which Jesus had never experienced.

17. In the Old Testament, the cup indicated punishment and judgment poured out by God. Isaiah 51:22

18. “And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.” Luke 22:43 ESV

19. “For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.” Psalm 16:10 ESV

20. “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8 ESV

21. Application:

·        When you are praying about a problem, seek to know God’s will in the matter.

·        When your friend is struggling with a problem, let them be aware of your support.

·        Prayer and communion with God will supply the wisdom, strength, and resolve to embrace Gods will.
