Gospel of John 17:13-26
Lessons Learned
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. Jesus did not allow His life to be pressed into the mold of the world and neither should we allow the world to shape our life.
2. The unity of believers is a testimony to the world that the Father sent the Son.
3. Lack of unity with believers becomes a barrier for the unbelieving world to come to Christ.
4. The presence of believers in the world as witnesses is an expression of God’s love for the lost.
5. Your first priority in heaven should be to see Jesus.
6. So dear, so very dear to God,
I cannot dearer be;
The love wherewith He loves the Son,
Such is His love for me!
-Catesby Paget
7. “The petitions made by Christ for His people refer to spiritual things, to heavenly blessings. Not for riches, or honor, or worldly influence, but deliverance from evil, separation from the world, qualification for duty, and a safe arrival in heaven.” Rainsford, Our Lord Prays p. 173
8. Believers are a love gift from the Father to the Son. Dr. John MacArthur
9. Jesus has a mission for His followers, therefore, We remain in this world.
10. Believers are to be in the world but not of the world.
11. ‘Sanctify’ in today’s text means to be set apart for God’s service.
12. ‘The world’ refers to the belief system that is opposed to God.
13. Application:
· Jesus has left us in the world to be ambassadors representing the kingdom of God.
· Jesus looked down through the years to pray for each one who would believe in Him.
· Unity with other believers is an important part of our witness to the lost world.
· Jesus wants us to be with Him to see His glory and experience His love—heaven is about being with Him.
