Mark 6:30-44

Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Parallel passages: Matthew 14:13-21, Luke 9:11-17, John 6:1-14.

2. “This miracle, found in all four gospels, took place at the beginning of the 3rd year of His public ministry.” William MacDonald Believers Bible Commentary

3. The mission trip, (Mark 6:7-13) where Jesus sent out the disciples two-by-two, was designed to teach the disciples faith lessons.

·         God would provide for their needs.

·         Jesus gave them authority and power for the mission.

·         They were not responsible for those who would reject their message.

·         People need to know the Lord (gospel).

·         Rejection is a part of ministry.

4. Ministry to people is hard work, it is important to rest and re-energize.

5. The goal of the boat trip was to get away. When a large crowd greeted them, Jesus had compassion on them. How would you have reacted?

6. The crowd of people followed Jesus to a desolate place.

7. Luke 9:10 tells us that Jesus and the disciples went to Bethsaida by boat to get away from the crowd, but the crowd followed on foot.

8. Jesus saw the crowd’s spiritual need and taught (fed) them, the disciples saw their physical need and thought about how this crowd of people could be fed.

9. Compassion—A deep emotional response grounded in love.

10. Jesus fed the crowd after a day of healing and teaching about the kingdom of God. Luke 9:11

11. Jesus is sufficient to meet your need.

12. Jesus was stretching the disciples’ faith when he asked them to feed the crowd. The disciples had been provided for (v8) on their mission journey, was it possible for Jesus to do that on a larger scale?

13. God can multiply what you have when you give it to him.

14. Jesus addressed both the physical and spiritual needs of the crowd.

15. Application:

  • Sometimes, the most spiritual thing you can do is rest.

  • Jesus, the Good Shepherd, is the only one who can satisfy the longing in your soul.

  • When your resources are meager, take what you have to Jesus to meet the challenging situation you are facing.
