Mark 3:20-35
Lessons Learned
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. Matthew 12:22-32 is a parallel passage to Mark 3:22-30.
2. Matthew adds that this incident took place after casting out a demon.
3. Matthew adds that as a result of the miracles Jesus was performing, the common people were questioning whether or not Jesus was the Messiah.
4. During the three-year ministry of Jesus, home was at Capernaum. See Mark 2:1
5. In Mark 3:22 the Greek indicates that the scribes ‘kept on saying He is possessed by Beelzebul.’
6. Beelzebul is a name the Jews used for Satan.
7. Other occasions in which Jesus was accused of having a demon: Matthew 9:34, John 7:20, 8:48, 10:20.
8. Jesus tried to correct the scribes by telling them parables.
9. A parable is an example from life placed alongside a spiritual truth in order to bring understanding to the spiritual truth.
10. Plunder - The forceful seizing of someone else’s property.
11. Jesus had demonstrated that he was stronger than Satan by taking back from Satan those that were once bound under his power.
12. In verse 28 Jesus declares that all sin can be forgiven.
13. The Jews understood the Holy Spirit to be that presence of God that brought the Word of God to light. Dr. Bob Utley
14. Blaspheme - Speaking evil against God.
15. The only way someone could blaspheme against the Holy Spirit is that after great enlightenment they deny the truth of God revealed by the Holy Spirit.
16. At any time during this life a person has the opportunity to repent.
17. Jesus did not allow his ministry to be interrupted by his family who did not yet understand or believe in his mission.
18. Mark 6:3 lists the brothers of Jesus and indicates he has sisters.
19. Jesus was saying that human relationships are not the most important relationships in your life. Your relationship with Jesus is more significant than family relationships.
20. Everyone who is united in Christ is family.
21. C. S. Lewis said that there were two types of men, those who say to God “Thy will be done,” and those to whom God in the end says, “Thy will be done.” There is nothing so frightening as a man having his wish granted when his wish is for God to leave him alone. This is the sin beyond forgiveness.
