Genesis 8

Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Noah entered the ark 7 days before it rained. Gen. 7:7,10

2. The flood began in Noah’s 600th year, 2nd month, and 17th day.

3. Water prevailed on the earth 150 days (Gen 7:24). (That is 5 months).

4. The mountain tops appear in 10th month on 1st day. (7.5 months after flood began.)

5. 40 days later, the raven and dove are sent out. The dove returned.

7. 7 days later a dove is sent out again. The dove returned with olive leaf.

8. 7 days later the dove is sent out again. The dove does not return.

9. In Noah’s 601st year, 1st month, and 1st day; the waters had dried up.

10. in Noah’s 601st year, 2nd month, and 27th day; the earth had dried out, God called Noah out of the ark.

11. All the days Noah was in the ark: Number 10 minus number 2 is one year and ten days plus number 1 (because he was in the ark 7 days before it rained) is a total of 377 days. {Biblical months are usually counted at 30 days for a 360-day year.}

12. “The heart of man is evil from his youth.” Genesis 8:21b

13. We are sinners by nature and by choice.

14. “When God appears to be silent, it is good for believers to look at how He communicates to us by what He has done, by what He is doing, and by what He has promised to do in the future.” Personal Study Guide p.68

15. Application:

  • God has promised that we can depend on the cycle of seasons to provide seed time and harvest.

  • Noah’s 1st act upon leaving the ark was to worship God.

What occasions cause you to worship?

  • Noah waited on God’s direction to enter and exit the ark. Don’t get ahead of God. Wait on the Lord. (See next page for scriptures.)

Psalm 27:14

Psalm 37:7,9,34

Psalm 40:1

Psalm 130:5

Isaiah 40:31

  • There is no indication in scripture that Noah was anxious or worried in the ark. Those who have trusted Jesus as Savior have no reason to be anxious.

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6

“Wait for the Lord;
    be strong, and let your heart take courage;
    wait for the Lord!” Psalm 27:14

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
    fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
    over the man who carries out evil devices!” Psalm 37:7

“Wait for the Lord and keep his way,
    and he will exalt you to inherit the land;
    you will look on when the wicked are cut off.” Psalm 37:34

“I waited patiently for the Lord;
    he inclined to me and heard my cry.” Psalm 40:1

“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
    and in his word I hope;” Psalm 130:5

“…but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
  they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31
