Acts 16:11-40

1. God directed Paul and Silas on their journey, leading them to the European continent.
Acts 16:9-10
2. This section of scripture addresses four events:
A. The conversion of Lydia. V 11-15
B. Satan’s efforts to patronize the gospel. V 16-21
C. The conversion of the Philippian jailer. V 22-34
D. The deliverance of Paul and Silas from prison. V 35-40
3. “Samothrace is an island in the Aegean Sea about halfway between Troas, the port of departure, and Neapolis, the port city of Macedonia, Paul’s destination. (Dr. Chance)
4. Samothrace was a mountainous island with a peak rising to 5,000 feet above sea level.
5. Lydia owns her own home and business.
6. “Throughout Acts baptism is based on a personal faith and commitment, and there is no reason to see otherwise in the household baptisms.” (Dr. Beasley-Murray)
7. A Roman Colony had all the privileges of cities in Italy:
self-government
no taxation
special legal perks
8. Servants of Satan (The father of lies. John 8:44) are not permitted to testify about God’s servants.
9. People who benefit from believing the devil’s lies are always offended by the truth.
10. Paul and Silas modeled for us the teaching of Jesus to rejoice and be glad when you are persecuted and falsely accused for Jesus’ name. Matt 5:11-12
11. Paul and Silas were accused of being Jews and teaching unlawful customs, not for being Christian.
12. Paul wrote out of experience in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
13. “Get above circumstances! Don’t allow yourself to be under them. Christians should never be under the circumstances.” Anonymous
14. Paul and Silas were the first to present a Christian concert in Europe.
15. God used the praise of Paul and Silas to shake the prison doors and stocks loose.
16. How could Paul see to know the jailer was about to take his life? The jailer had to call for lights to go into the prison.
17. The most important question anyone can ask is, “What must I do to be saved?”
18. Always be ready to point the way of salvation with the words, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”
19. Salvation is not about doing, but about believing.
20. A heart that has been touched by God demonstrates their newfound faith by their works.
21. One new believer can influence many others to believe in Jesus.
22. Salvation is a joyous experience.
23. Although Paul and Silas were not prosecuted but escorted from prison, the magistrates requested that they leave the city.
24. Luke begins using the pronouns ‘we’ and ‘us’, indicating that Luke is with the team. See Acts 16:10-13, 15-17.
25. Application:
The gospel is for everyone.
When you can praise God in the midst of adverse circumstances, you encourage others to look to God. (Salvation, strength, peace, joy, faith, self-control, etc.)
Be quick to give a word of encouragement.
What spills out of your mouth (heart) when you have been wrongly treated or accused?
