Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. John Mark was Barnabas’ Cousin. Col 4:10

2. John Mark deserted Paul and Barnabas on the first missionary journey. He went back home to Jerusalem. Acts 13:13

3. Barnabas and Paul’s disagreement over John Mark was so strong that they could no longer work together.

4. “A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city,
And contentions are like the bars of a castle.” Proverbs 18:19 NKJV

5. “We who are older need to be careful of our condemnation of the younger.” H.A. Ironside

6. Jesus told his disciples: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35

7. Barnabas is again mentioned favorably by Paul in 1 Corinthians 9:6 which was written approximately five years after this.

8. Barnabas was a good mentor for John Mark.

9. John Mark, with the help of Peter, wrote the Gospel of Mark 5 – 15 years after this time in Acts 16:39.

10. In time, Paul recognized the value of John Mark as a fellow laborer of the gospel.  See Colossians 4:10, Philemon 1:24, and 2 Timothy 4:11.

11. Paul’s second missionary journey was a 3- to 5-year venture.

12. Silas, sometimes called Silvanus, was one of the men who accompanied Paul and Barnabas back to Antioch with the verdict of the Jerusalem Council decision that circumcision was not required for Gentile believers. Acts 15:27.

13. When Paul and Barnabas first visited Lystra, Paul healed a cripple. At first, the people wanted to worship them as gods but were quickly persuaded by troublemakers to have Paul stoned and left for dead. Acts 14:8-19.

14. It had been 2 to 3 years since Paul visited Lystra on the first missionary journey.

15. Timothy was commended for his ministry when Paul returned to Lystra.

16. It was necessary to circumcise Timothy so the issue of circumcision would not become a stumbling block when ministering to Jews who knew his father was a Greek.

17. “To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews... I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.” 1 Corinthians 9:20a, 22b-23

18. What motivates you to serve the Lord?

19. Application:

  • ·        Believers can have disagreements, but that should not prevent them from continuing to serve the Lord.

  • ·        Do not allow previous failure of someone to define them as ‘not useful’ in the Lord’s service—Give them time to grow.

  • ·        Do not become discouraged by ‘closed doors,’ keep seeking where and how God can use you in His plan.
