Exodus 12:21-32

Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. God wanted Israel to remember their deliverance from bondage in Egypt so he commanded Israel to have a 7-day feast to commemorate the event. Deut. 16:1-8

2. Each group of people gathered together in a house was to sacrifice a choice one-year-old male lamb or goat from their flock.

3. Many sheep and goats were slaughtered by the Israelites on Passover night.

4. The Israelites exercised faith by sprinkling the blood on the door posts and following the other commands of Moses.

5. “The soul that sinneth it shall die.” Ezekiel 18:20a KJV

6. Jesus was the perfect and only lamb of God sacrificed for your sin.

7. Jesus is our exodus out of sin. Dr. Kevin Shrum

8. Jewish historian Josephus noted in the first century the Passover lamb was killed at 3:00 pm. This is the time that Jesus cried out, “‘It is finished’ and bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” John 19:30, Mark 15:33 - 34

9. The unblemished sacrifice that the Israelites offered at Passover foreshadowed the perfect sacrifice of Jesus substituted in your place when Jesus died for your sins.

10. Israel was to mark the beginning of each year with the Passover feast. Christians mark the beginning of their new life in Christ by observing communion.

13. The "Exodus Event" teaches us about God's desire to lead His people and His great compassion toward them. Dr. Don Laughlin

14. Because of the shed blood of Jesus believers experience:

  • Justification and redemption Rom 5:9, Eph 1:7

  • New covenant 1 Cor 11:25

  • Brought near to God Eph 2:13

  • Peace with God Col 1:20

  • Sinners are made clean (holy, sanctified) before God Heb 13:12

15. It is the responsibility of parents to train their children about God’s plan of grace and mercy toward them. Proverbs 22:6, Deuteronomy 6:7-9

16. The church reinforces what parents are to teach their children, not the other way around.

17. The Egyptians traded the fear of the number of Israelites for the fear of Israel’s God.

18. Application:

  • God wants you to remember your deliverance from the penalty of sin so he instituted the Lord’s supper as a way to remember that Jesus died in your place.

  • The blood of Jesus is your protection. Have you applied it to your heart?

  • God’s deliverance from sin and death is for those who are obedient to His call to believe.

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,” John 1:12 ESV

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 ESV

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” John 5:24 ESV

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 ESV

“And they said, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.’” Acts 16:31 ESV
