Lessons Learned
Romans 10
1. Chapters 9-11 address the issue of promises made to the Jews. If God is not going to
fulfill his promises to the Jews, then the New Testament Church can not trust God to
fulfill the promises of Romans 8:37-39.
• Chapter 9 addresses the issue from the perspective of God’s divine sovereignty—I
have mercy on whom I have mercy.
• Chapter 10 addresses the issue of human responsibility—believe, confess, and send
preachers.
• Chapter 11 addresses the issue of God’s final purpose—The gifts and calling of God
are irrevocable.
2. One-third of the content of chapters 9-11 comes from Old Testament quotations. Paul applies an Old Testament principle to New Testament salvation. (These are the Old Testament references in chapter 10.)
• 10:5—Leviticus 18:15
• 10:6—Deuteronomy 30:12
• 10:7—Deuteronomy 30:12
• 10:8—Deuteronomy 30:14
• 10:11—Isaiah 28:16
• 10:13—Joel2:32
• 10:15—Isaiah 52:7
• 10:16—Isaiah 53:1
• 10:18—Psalm 19:4
• 10:19—Deuteronomy 32:21
• 10:20—Isaiah 65:1
• 10:21—Isaiah 65:2
3. Paul used Old Testament references to prove to the Jews that Jesus whom they rejected was truly the messiah.
4. Seeking your own path to righteousness does not result in salvation.
5. Righteousness comes from God, there is no way for you to become righteous without God granting His righteousness to you.
6. Righteousness based on Old Testament law—obey all the laws, you may not make any mistakes, past, present, or future.
Righteousness based on faith—confess that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead.
7. God provided everything for your righteous standing before God in Christ.
8. The birth of Jesus brought Jesus down from heaven, there is no need to bring him down again. Jesus’ last words were, “It is Finished.”
9. You will not find Jesus in the grave—He is risen.
10. God is accessible:
• The word of faith is communicated by speaking (mouth).
• The Holy Spirit works in your heart to make Him known.
11. Confession is not a ‘work’ that produces salvation. Confession is a declaration of what has happened in your heart.
12. You should be just as excited about confessing Christ as your savior as you are
about confessing; a promotion, a newborn child/grandchild, new car, sports
team victory, etc. …
13. Salvation is for all. Everyone is invited to believe.
14. “For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”
Romans 10:13, Joel 2:32
15. Calling on the Lord to save you opens the windows of God’s riches to you.
16. Send a Preacher F Preaching F Hearing the gospel F Believing F Calling out to
God
17. Sending out (giving for their support) preachers of the gospel is God’s method for
reaching the world with the gospel.
18. “For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through
wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who
believe.” 1 Corinthians 1:21
19. Hearing the gospel is necessary, but it is not enough, every individual who hears must also exercise the faith provided to them by God (Ephesians 2:8) to believe the gospel.
20. “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
Romans 10:17
21. Verses 14 and 15.
