Lessons Learned
Romans 11
1. Paul raises two questions in Romans 11:
Has God rejected His people (Israel)? Verse 1
Did they (Israel) stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Verse 11
Paul answers both of the questions emphatically with, “By no means!”
2. Beginning in verse 13 Paul is addressing Gentiles. His point is that Gentiles should not become arrogant toward the Jews—God is not finished yet.
3. Two illustrations to explain the truth that God will be faithful to the promises made to the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob:
Numbers 15:17-21 is the image Paul uses. If the first fruit of dough is holy then the
whole lump is holy.
If the root is holy—So are the branches.
4. The branches are nourished by the root—don’t become proud in your position.
5. “… Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine,
neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. The one
who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing
without me.” John 15:4-5
6a. The result of unbelief is judgment from God.
6b. The result of faith (belief) is God’s favor.
7. God’s purpose of providing salvation to a lost world was not derailed by the Jews
rejection of Jesus as their messiah.
8. Israel previously had a position of privilege (see 9:4-5) however, as a result of their
rejection of Jesus as their messiah, they lost their position of favorite son. (Broken
branches of the olive tree.)
9. “For the Jews ask for signs and the Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles.” 1 Corinthians 1:22-23
10. When the Jews embrace Jesus as their messiah, God will restore their status of favorite son.
11. There has always been, and continues to be, a remnant of believing Jews.
12. Both Jews and Gentiles are disobedient, both are in need of God’s mercy.
13. The promises God made to Abraham and his descendants can not be retracted.
Therefore, there is coming a day when Israel will ‘look on Him whom they have
pierced.’ and repent. John 19:37
14. “Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the house of David and the
residents of Jerusalem, and they will look at me whom they pierced. They will mourn
for him as one mourns for an only child and weep bitterly for him as one weeps for a
firstborn.” Zechariah 12:10
15. Paul’s ministry to the Gentiles and their acceptance of the gospel is a means to make Israel jealous.
16. Paul did not give up on the Jews because God has not given up on them.
