Lessons Learned

Luke 7:36-50

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Luke records three stories of Jesus dining with Pharisees.

  • Luke 7:36-50

  • Luke 11:37-54

  • Luke 14:1-24

2. Invited guests were positioned around a U-shaped table. They reclined on their left elbow on a couch with their feet away from the table. The host was in the middle.

3. Hospitality for guests normally included:

  • A greeting with a kiss on the cheek.

  • Removing their sandals and washing their feet.

  • Anointing their head with scented olive oil.

  • The most honored guest was positioned on the right of the host.

4. The event in today’s text is different from a similar event recorded in Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9, and John 12:1-8.

5. The reputation of a person does not determine whether they are worthy of forgiveness (salvation).

6. This woman broke social rules of her day in order to express her love to Jesus:

  • She was not invited into the house.

  • She approached a man who was not a near relative.

  • She was weeping in the presence of men, making them uncomfortable.

  • She took on the role of a slave by washing feet.

  • She let down her hair in public.

7. It is ironic that Simon concluded Jesus was not a prophet but Jesus responded by revealing through a story Simon’s unspoken thoughts.

8. One denarius was one day’s pay for a day laborer. (See Matthew 20:2)

  • 500 denarii was approximately 1.5 years’ wages.

  • 50 denarii was almost 2 months’ wages.

9. Your sin is a debt owed to God that is beyond your ability to pay.

10. Faith opens the door of God’s grace that guarantees forgiveness in God’s court.

11. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)

12. Jesus saves all who come to Him in Faith. Dr. Jere Phillips

13. Forgiveness is found only in Jesus Christ.

14. The works of this woman were a demonstration of her love for Jesus.

15. The alabaster flask was an expensive container. It contained perfume much more valuable than scented olive oil.

16. The forgiveness experienced by this woman was because of her faith.

17. Peace is a by-product of faith.

18. Simon could see the sin of this woman but was blind to his own sin.

19. Simon’s work’s-based self-righteous attitude prevented him from experiencing the joy of forgiveness. Dr. Jere Phillips

20. All sin, any sin, separates you from fellowship with God, but “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 (ESV)

21. Application:

  • God will forgive anyone who repents of their sin and by faith trusts Jesus Christ for salvation.

  • As Jesus confronted Simon’s need for forgiveness, He was kind and spoke the truth in love.

  • Being forgiven makes you to be at peace with God.

  • Reflect on how you have expressed your love to God because of the forgiveness He has extended to you.
