Lessons Learned

Luke 9:18-27

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Outline for today’s text:

I. Jesus asks two questions. v18-20

II. Jesus told his disciples he would suffer, be killed, and rise the third day. v21-22

III. Cost of discipleship. v23-27

2. Occasions where Jesus is called the Christ (Promised One, Messiah). ESV study notes

·        Angels announced this to the Shepherds at His birth. Luke 2:11

·        Luke tells us that Simeon was anticipating to see Christ before he died.

·        Demons that Jesus had expelled. Luke 4:41

·        Jesus declared He was the Promised Messiah. Luke 4:18,21

·        By Peter as he spoke for the rest of the disciples. Luke 9:20

3. Although the people were expecting a Messiah, they did not expect him to suffer first. They expected a political deliverer. If the disciples published Jesus was the Messiah, the public would have tried to push Jesus into the political arena.

4. Verse 22 is the first occasion of Jesus telling the disciples He must suffer, be killed, and rise the third day.

5. Being a disciple (follower, learner) comes at a cost:

·        Self-denial- Giving up your own agenda to work on His agenda.

·        Daily cross-bearing- Dying to self on a daily basis.

·        Follow me- A continual action. You can not have two masters.

6. Christ is the Greek translation of the Old Testament Hebrew word Messiah (Anointed One).

7. Parallel passages for today’s text: Matthew 16:13-38 and Mark 8:27-9:1.

8. Both parallel passages identify that this happened at Caesarea Phillipi which is located north of Capernaum. This would be away from the crowds that followed him.

9. Prayer was important to Jesus. Do you make opportunities to separate yourself from the daily grind to pray?

10. What you believe impacts how you act.

11. If, when you come to the end of your life, you have made a great name for yourself but your soul is lost, you of all people are most miserable.

12. When asked, “What does it mean to 'take up your cross?’” A.W. Tozer said,

  • A man who is crucified is facing only one way.

  • A man who is crucified is not going back. He has said goodbye.

  • He has no further plans of his own.

13. “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

14. The call to deny self, take up your cross and follow Jesus is a tough road, however, the reward is matchless.

15. Now that the disciples know that Jesus is the Christ, Jesus begins to correct their understanding of what to expect would happen to Jesus.

16. The apostles gave their lives to follow Jesus, see these links:

17. Application:

  • We all must answer the question about what you believe about Jesus.

  • Being a disciple demands our allegiance to Him.

  • The rewards for following Jesus far outweigh the cost.

  • The title of our lesson is “Unashamed”. Make sure that the people who know you know that you're a follower of Jesus. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
