Introduction
Luke 10-24
1. Luke 1-9 covers approximately the first 1.5-2 years of the ministry of Jesus.
2. Luke 9:51 indicates that Jesus is determined and starts on the trip to Jerusalem where He will suffer, die, and rise from the dead.
3. Luke 10-19:27 contains the events of the last year of Jesus’ ministry.
4. Luke 19:28-24:53 covers the triumphal entry into Jerusalem until the ascension of Jesus. [Passion week + 40 days (Acts 1:3)]
5. About 60% of the content in chapters 10-18 is found only in the Gospel of Luke. Jensen’s survey of the New Testament
Lessons Learned
Luke 10:25-37

1. In Luke 10:1-16, Jesus appointed 72 others to go into all the cities He would come to on His way to Jerusalem.
2. In Luke 10:17-24, the 72 reported back to Jesus noting the power they had over evil. Jesus concluded by telling them that they had experienced what many prophets had kings had longed to see.
3. An expert in the Law was a scribe, they would know by memory all the writings of the Law and Prophets.
4. The intention of this expert was to test Jesus—not gain insight or information.
5. The questions, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” implies that eternal life is the result of human effort.
6. Jesus answered the man with a question in his area of expertise.
7. The lawyers answer came from Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18.
8. Jesus affirmed that the lawyer had the correct answer.
9. Jesus did not condemn the man, but when he answered by quoting scripture he felt condemnation because he felt he needed to justify himself.
10. It is a human tendency to seek a way to justify ourselves when we are wrong.
11. Jesus frequently told stories (parables) to make a point.
12. A man from Jerusalem to Jericho most likely was a Jewish man.
13. Going down—Jerusalem to Jericho was a 3000 foot descent over a distance of 17 miles.
14. Priest—served in the temple representing the people before God.
15. Levites—assisted in worship and maintaining the temple.
16. Samaritan—were descendant of Jews who had married pagans instead of Jews.
17. All three men saw the man who had been robbed and beaten.
18. A man is reaching out to help:
A stranger.
A Jew, someone who he hates and who hates him.
19. The man provided:
Bandages.
Oil and wine.
Put him on his own donkey.
Took him to a safe place.
Took care of him.
Left money (2 days wages) for his care.
