Luke 5:1-11, 27-32

1. We do not know if the “House”(NIV) mentioned in Luke 5:18 was Peter's, Mary's, or just rented. Dr. Don Laughlin
2. Dr. Bob Utley says “Jesus' actions had a twin purpose:
· To fulfill the Messianic prophecy of Isaiah 61:6 and
· To proclaim deity and authority by forgiving sin.”
3. The penalty for “blasphemy” was death by stoning. (see Leviticus 24:16) Jesus was not guilty due to the fact that He is God.
4. Jesus used every opportunity to teach.
5. Blaspheme means claiming for yourself powers limited only to God.
6. Faith moves the hand of God.
7. Obedience is the by-product of faith.
8. Jesus offers hope to those who seek Him.
9. The greatest need of every person is to receive the forgiveness of Jesus.
10. “The word ‘forgiven’ involves the removal of guilt that results from sin. It carries the sense of pardon.” Dr. Jere Phillips
11. Forgiveness is always linked with faith. See James 5:15
12. Omniscience- The state of knowing everything.
13. The term pharisee denotes those who by their meticulous observance of the Law in the smallest matters of daily life have ‘separated themselves’ from ritual uncleanness. Pastor Mark Fuhrman
14. The pharisaic community was a closed society. Strict rules of admission governed who might join. Initiates had to prove themselves during a lengthy probation period. Pastor Mark Fuhrman
15. Scribes (aka teachers of the Law or lawyers) had 4 responsibilities: Dr. Brooks
· Make copies of scripture.
· Interpret the Law.
· Teach the Law.
· Administer the Law (administer justice).
16. Application:
“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” Hebrews 11:6 (ESV)
Forgiveness is the result of faith and repentance.
You cannot hide your thoughts from God.
· Which role are you involved in?
(a) The Pharisees and teachers who were in the way preventing access to Jesus.
(b) The men who were determined to get their friend to Jesus.
How can you ‘carry’ someone to Jesus?
