 Lessons Learned

Ecclesiastes 12:1-14

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. God is the final judge of how you used the abilities and the gift of life he gave you.

2. The members of our physical bodies grow weak and wear out with age.

3. Don’t put off serving the Lord in your younger years because you will have less energy and mobility to do so when you are old.

4. Share your wisdom with the next generation.

5. Words of wisdom that are corrective will sometimes hurt and at other times they are an anchor to live by.

6. Trying to live without God results in a meaningless live.

7. The key question in Ecclesiastes: What makes life worth living?

  • Answer: A relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

8. God wants you to remember your days are few, don’t waste them.

10. Ten essential truths for living “under the sun.” Dr. Matt Capp

  • Anything that does not have eternal value has really no significant value. Everything humans achieve appears and disappears like a breath on a cold morning. Only what God does is lasting (Eccl. 1:1-11).

  • The wise person will find meaning in life through faith in God. All other pursuits to discover meaning in life—such as education, wealth, recreation, work, and power—are dead ends (1:12–2:26; 5:10–7:6).

  • Time is a gift from God. Wise people use time as God made it to be used—doing the right things, at the right times, in the right ways (3:1-15).

  • Obedience to God is more important than religious expressions of devotion. What’s more, God expects His people to have integrity and keep their promises to Him as well as to others (4:13–5:7).

  • Wise people trust God and His sovereign will for their lives (7:11-14).

  • God is not impressed with human efforts to achieve righteousness; He is pleased with humble devotion to Him (7:15-18).

  • Wisdom involves recognizing one’s own sin and leads to having compassion on others who also are sinners (7:19-22).

  • Wise people live their lives with a proper perspective of their mortality. They realize life is precious and that their window of opportunity is short-lived (11:7–12:8).

  • Wise people enjoy the life and blessings God has given them (2:24-26; 3:12-13,22; 5:18-20; 8:15; 9:1-10; 11:7-9).

  • Wise people fear God and obey His Word, realizing they will give an account to Him for how they lived their lives (12:9-14). This was Solomon’s final conclusion.

11. Application:

  • The aging process reduces your ability to serve—Don’t put off serving Jesus until later.

  • Share your faith and wisdom gained from life experiences with the next generation.

  • The most important lessons to learn in life; “...love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, (ie your entire being) and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27

  • Judgment is coming for everyone:

For the believer: Your works will be judged by fire. For those that survive the fire, you will receive a reward. 1 Corinthians 3:12-15

For the unbeliever: Names not in the book of life are thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:11-15
