Introduction to Philippians
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. Acts 16:8-40 records the details of Paul’s first visit to Philippi.
2. Paul established the church in Philippi on his 2nd missionary journey in 50 AD.
3. Paul’s letter to the Philippian church was written while he was in prison in Rome from 60-62 AD.
4. Philippi was the first church established on the continent of Europe.
5. Philippi was a Roman Colony (Acts 16:12) meaning it was just like being in Rome.
6. In Rome, Caesar was god and king.
7. There is no mention of a synagogue in Philippi. To form a synagogue there had to be 10 Jewish men who were heads of a household. Therefore, we conclude that there were very few Jews in Philippi.
8. Lydia and her household were the first converts in Philippi (Acts 16:25-34).
9. Paul and Silas were put in prison for casting a spirit out of a slave girl who was a fortune-teller.
10. The Philippian jailer and his household were converted (Acts 16:25-34).
11. Paul also visited Philippi on this third missionary journey (Acts 20:6).
12. Philippians is Paul’s letter of gratitude and appreciation and love to the church.
13. ‘Joy’ is used 5 times in 5 verses. ‘Rejoice/Rejoicing’ is used 9 times in 7 verses.
14. “A good definition of ‘joy’ is this: it’s the flag that flies on the castle of the heart when the King is in residence.” John MacArthur
15. Epaphroditus delivered a gift to Paul from the Philippians (Phil. 4:18).
16. Overview of Philippians by Tim Mackie: Length is 9:13
