 Lessons Learned

Philippians 3:8-21

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. False teachers focus on the things you need to do in order to please God.

2. Faith is the key that unlocks the door to God’s righteousness.

3. Apart from faith, no one is righteous.

4. No amount of works can make you righteous in the sight of God.

5. The Parable of the Hidden Treasure:

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Matthew 13:44 (ESV)

6. The Parable of the Pearl of Great Value

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” Matthew 13:45-46 (ESV)

7. The greatest gain that can come into your life is knowing Jesus Christ as your savior.

8. Followers of Jesus can expect to be treated as Jesus was treated.

9. Growth in the life of a Christian is a struggle worth the effort required.

10. All Christians can look forward to the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

11. Paul was asking the Philippians to imitate his:

·        Following Jesus.

·        Being found in Him.

·        Having His (Christ’s) righteousness.

·        A righteousness that depends on faith.

12. As a Christian, be mindful that you are a citizen of heaven:

·        Be a good ambassador.

·        Let your light shine

·        Growth is expected—don’t remain immature.

·        Jesus is coming again to receive His bride, the church.

13. Application:

·        You are not righteous because of works, family, church membership, or baptism. Righteousness is the result of faith in Jesus Christ.

·        Do not let past failures define who you are. Neither should you rest in past accomplishments. Press on to new opportunities to serve Christ.

·        The Christian life is one that should be marked by continued growth in your relationship with Christ, your Lord and Savior.
