Lessons Learned
Gospel of John 1:1-14
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. John’s opening statement would catch the attention of both Jews and Greeks.
‘In the beginning’ would direct the Jews to think about Genesis 1:1.
The ‘Word’ (Logos in Greek) would catch the Greeks’ attention to begin thinking about the philosophy of life.
2. John 1:14 clearly identifies Jesus to be represented by the ‘Word’.
3. Verses 1-2 establish the deity and preexistence of Jesus.
4. Jesus was the creator.
5. Apart from Jesus there is no eternal life.
6. God has not hidden from us, He has shined his light upon us in the person of Jesus Christ.
7. Man’s sin causes man to be in darkness.
8. John the baptist was the first man to testify of the deity of Jesus.
9. When Jesus came into the world, man now has a picture of what God is like.
10. Man has the option to believe in the name of Jesus or not believe that He is who he said He was.
11. Only those who believe in the name of Jesus have the right (authority) to be a child of God.
12. Application:
Jesus was the God-man, fully God and fully human at the same time.
Jesus has existed since eternity past.
The light of Jesus is stronger than all darkness.
The light is for everyone but Satan blinds the minds of man to hide the light.
Salvation is not a matter of genealogy, self-determination, or self-effort. It is the result of God working in the heart of man.
God closed the gap between man and God by sending His son to dwell with us and demonstrated to us God’s grace and truth.
