Lessons Learned

2 Kings 5:1-14

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Naaman was commander of the army of the king of the Syrians.

2. The LORD had given victory to Naaman.

3. According to Leviticus 13, leprosy was a term used for several skin diseases.

4. 1 Kings 22 records that the Syrians defeated Israel and king Ahab was killed in battle. Perhaps this is when the young Israelite girl was taken captive by Naaman.

5. “A little maid said a few words that made a commotion in two kingdoms. God honored her faith by doing for Naaman, the idolater, what he had not done for any in Israel. How often has the finger of childhood pointed grown-up persons in the right direction? The maid boasted of God that he would do for Naaman what he had not done for any in Israel; and God honored her faith.” D. L. Moody

6. Elijah was God’s prophet in 1 Kings. Elisha was God’s prophet in 2 Kings.

7. The faith and testimony of a young Jewish servant changed the life of Naaman.

8. The silver and gold the king sent with Naaman would be worth approximately $4 million on today’s market.

9. Contrast:

  • Ahaziah king of Israel was laying on his sick bed and sent messengers to inquire of Baalzebub, the god of Ekron, as to whether he would recover from his sickness. 2 Kings 1

  • Naaman, commander of the Syrian army, went to Elisha the prophet in Israel to be healed. 2 Kings 5

10. Miracles of Elisha:

  • The water of Jericho was healed. 2 Kings 2

  • Multiplication of the widow’s oil. 2 Kings 3

  • Revived the Shunammite’s dead son. 2 Kings 4

  • Purified the deadly stew. 2 Kings 4

  • Naaman healed of Leprosy. 2 Kings 5

  • Ax head that floated on water. 2 Kings 6

11. Neither the king of Israel nor the king of Syria is named, therefore, we don’t know when this event took place.

12. God makes himself known to those who seek Him.

13. As a Gentile, Naaman was a stranger to the promises and covenant with God and had no claim on His blessing.

14. God’s grace is extended to those who humble themselves and obey.

15. Naaman had two problems, pride and leprosy. If his pride would have prevailed, he would not have been healed.

16. Pride:

·        “In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him;
all his thoughts are, ‘There is no God.’” Psalm 10:4

·        “When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with the humble is wisdom.” Proverbs 11:2

·        “Pride goes before destruction,
and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18

17. You never know how God can use your circumstances to point someone to Jesus.

18. Thank God for people who direct you back to the truth.

19. When your expectation of what God should do to solve your problem collides with how God wants you to work out the problem, what do you do?

·        Allow God to have his way and gain a blessing.

·        Insist on your solution where you; miss a blessing, continue the heartache, and perhaps additional disappointment.

20. Application:

  • Pride prevents God from working in your life.

James 4:10

1 Peter 5:6

·        Your testimony is important. The simple testimony of a young girl changed the life of Naaman.

·        Just like Naaman, we were strangers and aliens to the covenants of promise (we are Gentiles), but in Christ we find grace and mercy by the blood of Christ. Ephesians 2:11-16
